Smoke and Ashes walkthrough: returning to the burned Laslea Glen with Anca, the astral communication scene at the corpse, the three mementos, and the mill that ends Day 1.
Smoke and Ashes begins automatically on Day 1 — the first quest of the open game, and the one that teaches you what the thirty days actually feel like. The village is ash, the family is scattered, and Coen learns a new kind of magic that lets him speak with the dead. Take the day slowly; this quest rewards wandering.

Return to Laslea Glen
Choose "I have to go back to Laslea" when talking with Anca, and she walks back with you. Follow the road, and stop at the dead tree on the left — the conversation here is worth having. When the moment comes, admit it plainly: "Anca, I'm scared right now." The scene is one of her best, and it sets the tone for the day.
The house
Two wild dogs have made a den of the yard; put them down and go inside. The house search is the quest's heart — use Focus mode on everything:
- The yard, Coen's room, the dining room — each holds interactables.
- The find that matters: a child's toy belonging to the youngest of the family.
- When the search ends, step outside for another scene with Anca: "What way?", then "How is that possible? This man is dead."
The astral communication scene
At the corpse by the house, the game teaches astral communication — Coen's necromancy, the ability to bind and question the dead. Cast it on the body, and when Anca worries about what this is doing to him, answer "It's not your fault. I wanted to learn."
Now gather the three mementos nearby with Focus: a flag, a gourd, and an apple. Return to the corpse and present each one — every item triggers its own unique memory conversation. It's a beautiful system moment: three objects, three windows into the village's last day.
The burial and the mill
Bury the body when the memories are done, then follow Anca toward the mill. Clear the obstacle blocking it, and the closing scene plays out:
- "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you."
- "I'll be careful."
That completes Smoke and Ashes — 150 XP on the tally, plus Burning Blood and astral communication spells for your effort, and Day 1 finally hands you the reins. The valley is open, the clock is running, and the next moves — scouting the valley from above, or chasing the first thread of the Ambrus trail — are yours to pick.
